Locals have always been able to keep the title on home soil. Can a Kiwi do it again? Daniel Craker walked away with NZD$257,040 and the champion’s trophy, and New Zealand’s first and only World Champion Simon Watt was able to work his way through a tough field to claim victory and NZD$209,000. It was then the turn of local music producer Danny ‘Brotha D’ Leaoasavaii who won NZD $170,000. In 2013 Geoff Smith was victorious winning NZD$80,502.

The WPT schedule concludes overseas in Auckland, New Zealand and Skycity Auckland. The NZD $2,200 buy-in WPT Main Event goes from May 31-June 3 and is the second WPT event in New Zealand. The 2018 tournament drew 360 entries and set the record for the largest tournament ever in New Zealand. The Festival of Poker culminated in the main event with a prize pool over $170,000. The nine-day tournament began on Saturday 19 November with the main event held from 24-27 November. The 2016 Festival of Poker was located in the newly opened SkyCity Auckland Poker Room which offers its own private bar, smoking balcony and toilets.
